Mally watched from the top of the yard wall as the lass from the local pub put the lid back tightly on the old tin dustbin, she was nice, he liked her. She always made time for a little light conversation and to wield a set of brightly coloured fingernails expertly behind his ears. Only once had she been foolish enough to try for a cuddle and still sported the battle scars on hand and face. It’s not that he was feral but just that he never liked feeling trapped. So they engaged in a little banter and he naturally showed his appreciation for the interaction by purring as hard as he could, all the while trying not to be as tacky as to give himself hiccups in the process.

They both knew that once she was safely ensconced behind the thick fire door that the bin would be infiltrated and he would be dinning on the punters scraps that had been deposited within regardless of how carefully the lid was secured down. Sunday’s behind the pub was always his favourite time of the wee, fry-ups in the morning, roast lunch served throughout the afternoon and if the weather was good, a BBQ in the evening. His motto was, ‘Live life for the now’ and right now ‘life’ was a pretty good one to be living.
